Music Genre Research (LeeAnn Rimes- Can't Fight The Moonlight)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx3s99FNXzI

Mise-en-scene
This song is the soundtrack to the film 'Coyote Ugly'. It is set at night in a rodeo bar and the artist is featured dancing on the work top of a bar. The bar is rodeo themed which can be related to the country genre. The setting is crowded with lots of people dancing and singing along, which gives the impression that people enjoy listening to this artist and their music. However, the rest of the music video does not include typical 'country' ideologies. The only aspects that relate to the genre are the costume. The characters wear cowboy-style clothing, such as big-buckle belts and cowboy boots. The bar is lit so there are shadows to imply that it is night, but spotlights are used to give more of a 'party' vibe.

Camera Shots/Angle/Movement/Composition
An establishing shot is used to introduce the setting of the bar, first outside to show it is in the city, and then in the actual bar with crowded people. In the music video itself, tracking shots are used to follow the artist as she struts up and down the bar, dancing along with the other characters. Close-ups are used to show the actions of the characters spinning bottles and dancing. The music video also includes clips of the film to narrate the plot of the movie. The shots included are close-ups of the characters reactions to each other and wide shots to show the setting, for example, when the male character is by his car at the brooklyn bridge.

Editing
Some of the clips are cut in time to the music, for example, at the beginning it jumps between two shots in time to the beat of the music. This happens regularly throughout the music video. there is also continuity between scenes as the artist walks across the bar, it cuts to the actress walking across the stage. However, there are no special effects used in the music video.

Sound
The song is non-diagetic and is played over the top of the music video, the only diagetic sound included is at the beginning of the music video where you can hear the sirens and cars outside the bar, and the noise of people in the bar. You can also hear clapping from the crowd at the end of the music video.

The song itself and the narrative does not fit into the genre. I think that this is effective because the fact that the music video is fun with lots of dancing, singing and drinking, will add a different perception of the country genre and not meet stereotypes of country farmers, etc. I therefore think it is important to have one or two microcodes linking with the theme of the music genre but it also needs to be modern to appeal to a wider audience and seem fresh and cool.
